Maiduguri — The Chairman of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities, Dr. Olawale Babalakin, has described as unfair, the warning strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) to protest the deplorable conditions of state universities in the country.

He said the strike was inconsistent with the letter and spirit of the various agreements signed by the parties.

Babalakin, who led the federal government team to sign an agreement with the unions before the strike, said it was disheartening that the union had to embark on the strike to call attention to certain problems in state universities and not issues concerning federal universities.

He said the federal government entered into an agreement with the unions for the continuous development of the university system and for fostering a harmonious relationship between the federal government and the university community.

Babalakin, a respected lawyer and businessman, said the federal government adhered commendably to its own side of the agreement and that the cooperation of the unions was enjoyed to a very large extent but the strike was however a low point.

He said, though he recognises the right of the unions to protest for any wrong done to their members, but it was unfair to penalise the federal government and the federal universities for the action or inaction of the state universities.

Babalakin, who spoke at the 21st convocation ceremony of the University of Maiduguri where he is the pro-chancellor, said he hopes that the breach of the agreement with the federal government will not take place again even as he wishes that the impasse with the state universities would be resolved soon
