The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), citing arbitrariness, has said that the striking teachers of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) would not succumb to threats by their governing council to sack them.
ASUU’s President, Prof. Ukachukwu Awuzie, who gave this indication, stressed that the government must comply with international and local labours laws because the teachers were not casual workers.
The RSUST governing council had last Thursday threatened to sack all striking teachers who have been on strike since October last year if they failed to resume work on January 27, 2011.
The Council’s Registrar and Secretary, Mrs. D.C. Odimabo, has described the strike by ASUU and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) as unlawful industrial action.
According to her, the law establishing the university recognises the council as the employer of all staff. And by virtue of this provision, the Federal Government in its agreement with the unions directed them to negotiate with their respective employers, which the unions have failed to do.
But Awuzie said in Port Harcourt yesterday that ASUU was not perturbed by the governing council’s threat, as it was not the first time such threats have been issued to striking teachers.
“Professors and doctorate degree holders are not stored in a warehouse where you can just go there and open and they will come out. These lecturers are not casual workers hence you cannot sack them like that. Where are the labour laws,” he said.
The ASUU president, who insisted that the Rivers State government should implement the agreement reached between the union and the Federal Government, accused some persons in government of getting intoxicated with power instead of solving the problems plaguing the university system.
Awuzie, who expressed dismay over the vandalisation of ASUU vehicles at RSUST staff club by irate students last week, said it was disheartening that the police and the State Security Service (SSS) had remained mute over the incident.
He explained that there seems to be a connivance between some persons in authority and the students to destroy the morale of the striking teachers through harassment and intimidation.
“I hope it will stop at this. If the government wants to sack the teachers, they can go ahead. But if any harm is done to any of our members, we shall hold the government culpable for that,” he said.
He reiterated that both federal and state governments ought to be saddened by the fact that none of the country’s universities was among the best 5000 in the world. He challenged government officials to visit the United States (U.S.), Europe, Australia and South Africa to appreciate what universities are and how they are run and managed.
Mrs. Odimabo had said that the council regrettably noted that as a result of incessant industrial actions by the unions especially since 2008, the university has suffered loss of one academic session.
According to her, “this prompted the merging of 2008/2009; 2009/2010 and the institution also risk losing another session 2010/2011.”
