ASUU/NASU Members of RSUST Get Sack Threat

THE Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST) Governing Council has threatened to sack all striking lecturers and non-academic staff if they failed to resume work within two weeks.
The council’s Registrar and Secretary, Mrs. D.C. Odimabo said yesterday the directive follows the unlawful industrial actions embarked upon by the local branches of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Non- Academic Staff Union (NASU) since October.
She noted that the unions’ action had been predicated on the agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU, NASU and others on the implementation of FG/unions agreement.
Odimabo explained that without prompting, the council last March set up a committee to work out the financial implication as contained in the Federal Government and the unions’ agreement and made appropriate recommendations to the Rivers State government through the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte.
She said the unions were invited by council and briefed on the recommendations made to the government. But without waiting for further information from council, ASUU declared an illegal indefinite strike with effect from October 21, 2010.
The registrar pointed out that despite entreaties and mediations by well-meaning indigenes of the state, including the university’s former Vice Chancellor, Prof. A.I. Ahiauzu and the erstwhile Vice chancellor of University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Nimi Briggs, the teachers had refused to call off the strike.
According to her, the council had made overtures to the striking unions to resolve the issues despite the fact that it had no direct conflict with them, but to no avail.
Odimabo said the council regrettably notes that as a result of incessant industrial strike actions by the unions especially since 2008, the university has suffered loss of one academic session. According to her, this prompted the merging of 2008/2009; 2009/2010 and the institution also risk losing another session.
The university chief said students admitted for 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 were unable to commence lectures and this had warranted the delisting of the university from admission of students for 2012 by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
Other loses suffered by the university include the chance to participate in National Youth Service Corps Service for Batch A in 2011.
She asserted that the law establishing the university recognises the council as the sole employer and by virtue of this provision, the Federal Government in its agreement with the unions directed them to negotiate with their respective employers.
