Answers to some Offapoly Questions
THE Federal Polytechnic, Offa, Kwara state, may have been recognized by the Food Security section of the United Nations over its recent research breakthrough, by converting sweet potatoes to flour.
The development, apart from having the potentials to convert perishable goods into non perishable ones via diligent preservation, would equally serve as a food security breakthrough for the rest of the world.
Already, the host community, noted for its industry in the area of cultivation of sweet potatoes, has doubled its planting capacity just as the institution itself has embarked on acquiring an expanse of land along Ojoku Road Offa to plant more of the product.
Speaking on the development at the weekend in Offa during the 7th Convocation of the Polytechnic, the Rector, Dr Mufutau Olatunde Olatinwo, said the school was ready for the challenges inherent in the global recognition.
He said: “I am happy to report that your polytechnic has been recording remarkable feats through research and development especially through innovative and relevant academic research works and fabrications.
“Just to mention a few, it will be recalled that the Polytechnic has earned international recognition for the breakthrough in sweet potato research. The food Technology Department of the polytechnic, acclaimed for its sweet potato-flour-for-bread-and confectioneries research, further developed Ethanol and 19 other important products.”
Olatinwo added that the International Centre for Sweet Potato Processing and Utilization based in Kenya, which is representing the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, “is currently working with the Polytechnic in the Sweet Potato utilization for Poverty Alleviation in Africa and indeed the entire world.”
The convocation event came after the suspension of the ceremonies some eight years ago, due to alleged wrangling at the polytechnic until the recent peace.
In his address at the colourful event, the Chairman Governing Council, Senator Onyeka Amadi Okoroafor, said the greatest feat achieved by the Polytechnic under his council was restoration of peace to the school after many years of mistrust among the stake holders.
Okoroafor added, “we have been able to go very far in reconciling all the contending forces, to evolve a purpose-driven institution and harness all the individual and collective efforts required t0o take the poly to the zenith of academic excellence we all desire.”
The Chairman Board of Directors of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Hassan Adamu, commended the authorities of the institution for being the very first to complete the NDIC bankrolled projects.
Adamu added: “this initiative was conceived in pursuance of the corporation’s social responsibility with a view to providing assistance towards the enhancement of educational activities and to move the country forward on the path of social and economic development.”
“A number of tertiary institutions selected from the six geo-political zones of the country, have over the years benefited from the Corporation’s project-based funding scheme, which allows beneficiary institutions to conceive and execute specific projects of their choice.”
