The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) requires about N6.7billion to achieve its objectives, its Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vincent Tenebe, has said.

Tenebe told the Presidential Visitation Panel that the most challenging task before the institution was in developing materials for learning, acquisition of facilities and the renovation of existing ones.

He told the panel led by Prof. Olusegun Oke that of its N2.4 billion budget for last year, only 25 per cent was released to the institution.

According to him, the money is required to meet its most pressing needs which include the completion of the conference centre at its Kaduna centre, completion and furnishing of the media block, and the fencing of the about 4,000-hectare Fadama farm land.

He also said the institution also needs money to complete its Abuja model study centre, which costs about N650 million; secure the university’s 20 hectares of land, construct its head office complex for N1.9 billion, develop its Lagos office and course materials.

He noted that the university lacks a strong presence in Abuja and that it needed advocacy to increase awareness while also establishing more study centres.

He said by the end of his tenure, he hoped to raise the admission capacity of the university from its present 65, 000 to 500, 000 students because Nigeria has a large population which needs to be educated.

Prof. Oke commended the institution for its vision. He canvassed support for its call for funding.

"I must say that this place is vast and it needs a lot of money to bring it up to standard. We feel that a lot has to be done in terms of funding," he said.
