AS part of efforts to sanitise admission into the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, the management said 30,866 applications, mostly with fake results, have been rejected while only 6,134 from the 37,000 candidates that applied have been granted admission for the 2010/2011 academic session.
Rector of the school, Dr. Philipa Idogho, disclosed this during the school’s 19th matriculation ceremony where she also warned the students that the polytechnic abhors examination malpractice and result falsification.
According to her, some of those that were not given admission for this session fell into the category of those who falsified results while others did not meet the school’s minimum mark in their interviews.
A statement by the institution’s spokesman, Mustapha Oshiobugie, quoted the rector as saying that 63 students were expelled and another six rusticated last year for offences connected with examination malpractice and result forgery, adding that the new students would not be spared of such sanctions if they were found culpable.
“The polytechnic is governed by rules and regulations, which you are all expected to be conversant with. Cheating and all fraudulent practices during examinations are forbidden. It has been observed that students have kept presenting fake credentials and certificates for the purpose of gaining admission. The polytechnic has verification machinery for ensuring that students with fake credentials are detected.
“Know it that when caught, the sanction is expulsion for credentials and rustication for examination malpractice”, the rector was quoted as saying.
She reiterated determination of the management to make learning environment conducive for students to optimise their time for learning.
To achieve this, Idogho said the library facilities of the school have been upgraded with the commissioning of the second phase expansion, in addition to the Internet facility that has been provided for the library with alternative power supply.
